Labels

I was just updating my About section over on my personal FB page and noticed a new (?) feature called Intro.  I actually have no idea how long that has been there. A week? 3 months? 20 minutes?  But I digress…

Anyway, I was suddenly struck by the way I was labeling myself and realized, Aha! I really do get to say whatever I want to about myself! YES!

I define myself to the world, not the other way around.

Here’s some of the (awesome!) labels I’ve chosen for myself: Just a little ray of sunshine! Occasional showers with a chance of Potty Mouth. Kaleidoscope Eyes, Stained-Glass Heart, Do-what-i-want-to Kind of Girl, Boss Lady, Support System, Social Justice Warrior, Lover & Fighter, Encouragement Entrepreneur, Author, Artist, Dreamer, DOer.

Blessing #14: I Choose Joy

Joy is a Choice

Every day, our lives involve a series of choices to be made from the moment we wake to the moment we drift off to sleep. Certainly, we must make many of these decisions based on or in reaction to the decisions of those around us, whether they are people within our household, the people in our workplace, or the strangers we pass on the road. But there is without fail one choice that always depends solely on us: The choice to be more Joyful.

“Joy does not simply happen to us. We have to choose joy and keep choosing it every day.” ~Henri J. M. Nouwen

Being joyful goes beyond the surface emotion of happiness, which while wonderfully fun to experience, is fleeting, temporary, and in direct relation to our circumstances at the moment. Happy comes and goes. Joy goes much deeper. It is a state of mind, a sense of contentment and peace that can co-exist with the more challenging and darker aspects we all face in our lives.

Joy is about seeking a spiritual connection to life itself and serves as more of an anchor for our souls during good times and bad. It isn’t easily shaken off, but like a strong tree planted in fertile soil, joy has the capacity to take root inside of us and grow despite adversity. Joy doesn’t slap a fake smile on your face and ignore or minimize the hard things you are dealing with, but instead Joy taps in to your deeper reserves of faith, strength and courage, and in turn blesses you with confidence and community.

Today, I will choose Joy.  I hope that you will too!

The Sixth Blessing: Kindness

Blessing #6: I am Kind to Myself

If you are anything like me, you probably have an Inner Critic who is kind of a jerk sometimes. Mean. Negative. A real ball-buster!  And when he/she/it starts in on you, your inner monologue becomes a stream of insults, angry accusations, shame and painful memories on instant replay.

I’m willing to bet that some of the things you sometimes say to yourself are words and phrases you would never use against your best friend, your beloved, your child- and if you did, you probably felt pretty horrible about it.

It begs the question: Why do we think it’s okay to say such awful, unkind things to ourselves? There is nothing positive or uplifting about repeating hurtful words back to ourselves. It really isn’t helpful. It’s actually quite destructive! It doesn’t do anything to move us closer to our goals. On the contrary, it holds us back from achieving and experiencing life in it’s most beautiful and fulfilling capacity.

I decided that I had spent way too many years listening to that old shrew with her cruel words and all-around bitchiness. Who needs that kind of aggravation? I decided that it was time to start changing the script and rewrite my inner monologue.

I want to invite you to take a step forward today in shutting down the constant negative flow from that Inner Critic. In working with one of my favorite people, Nicole Lewis-Keeber, I learned that those “negative” messages actually were trying to protect me from repeating an unhealthy pattern, or that my wounded inner-child was simply afraid of a new situation. I learned that by taking time to pause and ask, “What do I really need right now?” it made it safe for me to deal with those old stories and move forward. I invite you to start on a path of kindness and gentleness that feeds your sweet soul, instead of poisoning it. Make friends with yourself today!

Take a deep breath, release, then say this with me: 

“I AM KIND TO MYSELF. WHEN I TALK TO MYSELF, I SAY KIND AND ENCOURAGING THINGS. I TREAT MYSELF LIKE I WOULD TREAT A DEAR, LOYAL FRIEND. I USE GENTLE AND SUPPORTIVE LANGUAGE WHEN I AM LEARNING SOMETHING NEW. I CAUSE NO HARM TO MYSELF IN WORDS OR ACTIONS. I AM KIND TO MYSELF.”
