The Thirty-First Blessing: I am Complete

Blessing #31: I Am Complete

In launching The Blessings Butterfly, I initially set out to write a simple book of affirmations, meditations, blessings and encouragements that would express to the people I love the most just how much they mean to me. I chose words and thoughts and themes that would empower the handful of people I had hoped would read it. Beautifully, in the process, I came to discover a new sense of love and acceptance and joy and freedom within myself. The blessings became circular, as they poured out of my heart and flowed over me and came back to me, in a perfect loop. Each Mantra unlocked a profound healing lesson as I explored layers within myself that were still carrying wounds, scars, and brokenness.

This is the culmination of all the blessings, and in reading them together, out loud, I feel a sense of empowerment knowing that I am complete.

I AM LOVED. I AM GRATEFUL. I AM STRONG.
I AM A GOOD PERSON. I AM HEALTHY & I AM WHOLE.
I AM KIND TO MYSELF. I AM PATIENT. I AM GENEROUS.
I AM FUN. I AM ADVENTUROUS. I BELIEVE IN MYSELF.
I AM TRULY BEAUTIFUL. I AM WORTHY & DESERVING OF GOOD THINGS.
I CHOOSE JOY. I AM COMPASSIONATE. I AM WISE. I AM POWERFUL.
I FORGIVE YOU. I MAKE AMENDS.
I CREATE GREAT MEMORIES. I AM CREATIVE.
I SEE BEAUTY ALL AROUND ME.
I AM SAFE & SECURE. I AM COURAGEOUS.
I AM GOOD AT WHAT I DO. I AM ALWAYS LEARNING.
I AM SUCCESSFUL.
I AM WEALTHY.
I AM HONEST.
I AM FREE.

When I work 1:1 with my private clients, these are the lessons that we address together. This is the framework for my holistic healing work, and my offering to the world.

The Sixth Blessing: Kindness

Blessing #6: I am Kind to Myself

If you are anything like me, you probably have an Inner Critic who is kind of a jerk sometimes. Mean. Negative. A real ball-buster!  And when he/she/it starts in on you, your inner monologue becomes a stream of insults, angry accusations, shame and painful memories on instant replay.

I’m willing to bet that some of the things you sometimes say to yourself are words and phrases you would never use against your best friend, your beloved, your child- and if you did, you probably felt pretty horrible about it.

It begs the question: Why do we think it’s okay to say such awful, unkind things to ourselves? There is nothing positive or uplifting about repeating hurtful words back to ourselves. It really isn’t helpful. It’s actually quite destructive! It doesn’t do anything to move us closer to our goals. On the contrary, it holds us back from achieving and experiencing life in it’s most beautiful and fulfilling capacity.

I decided that I had spent way too many years listening to that old shrew with her cruel words and all-around bitchiness. Who needs that kind of aggravation? I decided that it was time to start changing the script and rewrite my inner monologue.

I want to invite you to take a step forward today in shutting down the constant negative flow from that Inner Critic. In working with one of my favorite people, Nicole Lewis-Keeber, I learned that those “negative” messages actually were trying to protect me from repeating an unhealthy pattern, or that my wounded inner-child was simply afraid of a new situation. I learned that by taking time to pause and ask, “What do I really need right now?” it made it safe for me to deal with those old stories and move forward. I invite you to start on a path of kindness and gentleness that feeds your sweet soul, instead of poisoning it. Make friends with yourself today!

Take a deep breath, release, then say this with me: 

“I AM KIND TO MYSELF. WHEN I TALK TO MYSELF, I SAY KIND AND ENCOURAGING THINGS. I TREAT MYSELF LIKE I WOULD TREAT A DEAR, LOYAL FRIEND. I USE GENTLE AND SUPPORTIVE LANGUAGE WHEN I AM LEARNING SOMETHING NEW. I CAUSE NO HARM TO MYSELF IN WORDS OR ACTIONS. I AM KIND TO MYSELF.”

The Fourth Blessing: Goodness

Blessing #4: I Am a Good Person

I like to think of myself as a Good Person. Not without some flaws, not perfectly polished, not without loads of mistakes along the way; but at the core of my being and in the way I choose to live my life, I am one of the Good Ones.

One of the ways that I make this true is by being accountable to a few trusted souls- my own personal posse that I’ve cultivated over the years- and by staying honest & truthful with myself, and with them.

I’ve learned that being a Good Person is a lot easier to do when I surround myself closely with other Good People. The company I keep and the people who I am closest to are men and women who inspire me daily because they are so uplifting, positive, honest and kind, and they see and encourage the same from me. When one of us starts to go a little off the rails, it is easy to reach out and get back on track. We care about each other, and that care extends to those around us. Good begets Good.

Think about your personal posse. Who are you closest to? Are they people who uplift and encourage you? Do they inspire you through their own actions, rather than intimidate or criticize?  Seek out people who will build you up, not tear you down.  Because you are a Good Person and the world needs more Good People like you.  Say it with me:

“I AM A GOOD PERSON. I CHOOSE TO SHOW KINDNESS TO THE PEOPLE I COME IN CONTACT WITH EVERY DAY. I CARE ABOUT MY FAMILY, MY FRIENDS, MY NEIGHBORS, MY COLLEAGUES, AND PEOPLE I MAY NEVER EVEN MEET. I AM KIND TO ANIMALS, AND I TAKE CARE OF THE WORLD I LIVE IN. I DO NOT TAKE ADVANTAGE OF OTHERS. I AM A GOOD PERSON.”
