The Little Things

Days turn into weeks turn into months turn into years. What do we learn in our brief time on the wheel of life?

I have learned I am more and more grateful for the little things, the niceties, the goodness of humanity.

Little things matter, like “please” and “thank you”

Warm smiles and friendly waves go a long way

Kindness is beautiful

Well chosen words and sincere compliments can mend hurt feelings

And love, LOVE- always wins

grateful

Dreamer

My parents [rest in peace <3] always reminded me that I’m a Dreamer.  Sometimes it was said as a compliment, but not usually.  I didn’t care, because I always knew it to be true and never saw it as a negative quality.

I think it’s part of my magic.

In the wake of the most recent acts of terrorism and the following waves of hatred, fear, intolerance and increased ethnocentrism around the globe- I have to Dream.

I have to Dream of a better world.

I have to Dream of people from all walks of life, just living day by day in peace.

I have to Dream of creating moments of Love, of Light, of Beauty, of Hope and sharing them.

I have to Dream of what it would look like if I could make one person pause and smile, and if that person did the same, and so on and on until the smile stretched and went around the World and wrapped her in a warm embrace.

Yes, I am a Dreamer, but I am also a Doer.

I will do my part in making this a more beautiful, magical, loving world today, and I invite you to join me.  Create a world of peace within yourself. Be a little more patient, a little less rushed.  Share your smile, and let kindness shine through your eyes. Take the time to  p a u s e  and actually look at the people you interact with today.  Imagine they are carrying a giant weight on their shoulders that no one else can see.  Dream.

Monday Mantra: I See Beauty

In a world where far too often there is tremendous pain, brutality, and the ugliness of senseless violence- it is ever more important to look for and find Beauty in our daily lives.  Just as Light overcomes Darkness, so does True Beauty overcome Ugliness.

See Beauty, Be Beauty.

THE AMAZING VARIETY OF ANIMALS IN THIS WORLD IS BEAUTIFUL. THE SONGS OF THE BIRDS ARE BEAUTIFUL. THE SUNRISES AND SUNSETS ARE BEAUTIFUL. THE UNIVERSE IS FILLED WITH BEAUTY! I SEE BEAUTY ALL AROUND ME.” ~The Blessings Butterfly

The Thirty-First Blessing: I am Complete

Blessing #31: I Am Complete

In launching The Blessings Butterfly, I initially set out to write a simple book of affirmations, meditations, blessings and encouragements that would express to the people I love the most just how much they mean to me. I chose words and thoughts and themes that would empower the handful of people I had hoped would read it. Beautifully, in the process, I came to discover a new sense of love and acceptance and joy and freedom within myself. The blessings became circular, as they poured out of my heart and flowed over me and came back to me, in a perfect loop. Each Mantra unlocked a profound healing lesson as I explored layers within myself that were still carrying wounds, scars, and brokenness.

This is the culmination of all the blessings, and in reading them together, out loud, I feel a sense of empowerment knowing that I am complete.

I AM LOVED. I AM GRATEFUL. I AM STRONG.
I AM A GOOD PERSON. I AM HEALTHY & I AM WHOLE.
I AM KIND TO MYSELF. I AM PATIENT. I AM GENEROUS.
I AM FUN. I AM ADVENTUROUS. I BELIEVE IN MYSELF.
I AM TRULY BEAUTIFUL. I AM WORTHY & DESERVING OF GOOD THINGS.
I CHOOSE JOY. I AM COMPASSIONATE. I AM WISE. I AM POWERFUL.
I FORGIVE YOU. I MAKE AMENDS.
I CREATE GREAT MEMORIES. I AM CREATIVE.
I SEE BEAUTY ALL AROUND ME.
I AM SAFE & SECURE. I AM COURAGEOUS.
I AM GOOD AT WHAT I DO. I AM ALWAYS LEARNING.
I AM SUCCESSFUL.
I AM WEALTHY.
I AM HONEST.
I AM FREE.

When I work 1:1 with my private clients, these are the lessons that we address together. This is the framework for my holistic healing work, and my offering to the world.

The Twelfth Blessing: Beauty

Blessing #12: I am Truly Beautiful

Dorothy Parker famously said, “Beauty is only skin deep, but ugly goes clean to the bone.”

(Quite) a few years prior, Plato mused that “Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder.”

Is there a woman or a girl on this or any other planet who hasn’t at some point wrestled with the idea that she is, in fact, beautiful? In every age and in every culture, there are evolving and somewhat fickle standards of beauty that women have either tried to achieve or have struggled against. And don’t think that men haven’t been affected by this craziness. If you are a man and you have a mom, a sister, a girlfriend, a wife, a daughter- if you have ever interacted with a female at any point in your life- you know these 4 dreaded words: “Do I look pretty?”  The beauty industry generates billions of dollars in revenue each year by playing on our fear of looking ugly. God forbid that we should be considered ugly! As though our face and hair and body must appear perfect by some industry standard or we just won’t measure up and we will be, I don’t know, less than.

I see nothing wrong at all about caring for your physical appearance and making an effort to look your best.

Sadly, we seem to have become so twisted in our view of what we really are and so skewed in our perception of what beauty is that we will do anything to be beautiful. We obsess over our weight, the size of our breasts, and the shape of our butts and bellies. We freak out over our first wrinkles and our first grey hairs. We go on unsustainable diets and insane exercise programs. We pour a fortune into facial creams and skin treatments and hair coloring. We modify and alter our appearance through accessories, cosmetics, even surgery, all on a quest to be beautiful.  To hear the words, even if they are spoken by just one person: Wow, you look beautiful!  Because let’s be honest- it feels pretty good to hear that.

We want so badly to be validated as beautiful.  And when we are not, or worse- when we are cut down by the cruel words of someone’s intolerance, bullying, and shaming- something inside us dies a little, and we just give up. We don’t believe that we have anything beautiful about us, minimizing and ignoring the incredible creatures that we ALL are.

When someone compliments you on your appearance, do you ever catch yourself saying things like, “Thanks, but…” and then proceed to verbally tear down something else about yourself?  Or maybe it’s more like, “I guess my ____ looks okay, but my _____ needs a lot of work.”  Or how about, “Well, I might be (insert vaguely complimentary term) but I’m certainly not beautiful.”  Hey! You know what? Stop it! You ARE Beautiful. Yes. You are!

I want to change that. Today, instead of criticizing the way I look, I want to go full on Plato on myself and see myself as Beautiful. I want to truly see the beautiful essence of LIFE that I embody! I want to look in my lovely green eyes and see the eternal energy behind them, all of my light and all of my darkness, and be in awe of perfectly, amazingly, uniquely beautiful ME. I will choose to stop picking apart every so-called flaw.  I will silence the voice of the fat-shamer.  I will turn aside the judging eyes. It may not be easy, and I may break down in tears, but I am determined to stop punishing myself. Today, I invite you to do the same.  Come on, Beautiful. Let’s do this! <3

The Fifth Blessing: Health & Wholeness

Blessing #5: I am Healthy and I am Whole

Are you ready for a radical thought? Living in good health and feeling whole & complete in your own body is absolutely possible, no matter where you are at right now.

It’s true!

Haven’t you met people who, despite any apparent physical challenges, are quite comfortable and at ease in their body? Men and women who have a seemingly endless supply of positive energy, a magnetic personality, and a commanding presence when they enter a room?  I know I have.  They have incredible, inspiring stories of overcoming physical and/or mental challenges and have mastered the ability to persevere and live in their victory, day after day.

Conversely, I’ve also known plenty of people who, despite looking “perfect” on the outside, are pretty miserable to be around because they are so deeply unhappy. And others who are so bitter about their physical appearance or body challenges that they’ve grown overly critical, closed-off, negative, even self-destructive. It breaks my heart!

Most of us seem to live somewhere in-between, don’t we? Maybe your health goal is about trying to achieve and maintain a certain weight, or maybe it’s about battling a disease. No matter the individual goals, one thing we all want is to just be happy.

I want to suggest that being happy begins with loving the body you have right now.

Radical, I know. But true. And absolutely do-able!

By making changes to our mindset and integrating positive messages to ourselves every day, we can begin to stop hating our bodies. We learn to stop treating the body we live in like an enemy to battle. We learn to work with our physicality, whatever it may look it. We stop abusing, and start healing. We start becoming allies with our whole & complete self, and learn to live in peace and harmony with our authentic, amazing, incredible self.

Today, right here and right now, is the perfect time to start making positive changes. Take a deep breath, release, and then say it with me:

“I AM HEALTHY & I AM WHOLE. MY BODY IS HEALTHY. MY MIND IS HEALTHY. MY EMOTIONAL SELF IS HEALTHY. I AM WHOLE & COMPLETE. I CHOOSE TO TAKE GOOD CARE OF MYSELF EVERY DAY. I CHOOSE TO MOVE MY BODY TO THE BEST OF MY ABILITY, BECAUSE IT FEELS GOOD! I LIKE TO EAT, SO I CHOOSE NOURISHING MEALS THAT SATISFY ME. I ENJOY RESTING AND I GIVE MYSELF PLENTY OF SLEEP. I AM COMPLETELY IN CHARGE OF MY OWN HEALTH AND PERSONAL CARE. I AM HEALTHY & I AM WHOLE.”

The Third Blessing: Strength

CONTENT/TRIGGER WARNING: mentions of traumatic life events

Blessing #3: I am Strong

As I have reached this point in my life-journey, I am simply amazed at the various and difficult circumstances I’ve gone through in 5 decades. I have survived bullying, incest, sexual abuse, homelessness, domestic violence, stalking, drug addiction, alcoholism, two broken engagements, and more. So much loss, pain, and heartache. Too much for a blog! Dark places, ugly places, scary places. Heartbreaking places. Terrifying places. Some places that I thought, in the moment, I would not survive. But I did. And though I was once a victim, I became a survivor. A warrior!

But I do hold the memories of those times and, more importantly, the lessons learned as incredibly valuable.

The one thing they have in common is that they are all in the past.  I used to shut these memories down and try to just stuff them away. That doesn’t work, by the way- the patterns created will continue to replay in your life until you deal with them. With the help of amazing friends, some great coaches and a lot of work, I have since learned how to successfully integrate these various stages of my self, heal them, and love them. Heal me. Love me! My narrative has changed from Victim to Warrior, from Broken to Beautiful.

You have a story too, uniquely your own. No tear you’ve shed is wasted, no scar you bear is useless.

You are Strong. You are Resilient. You are a Survivor.

I invite you to take a deep breath, release it, and say it with me:

“I AM STRONG. I AM STRONG PHYSICALLY, MENTALLY, AND EMOTIONALLY. I HAVE OVERCOME SO MANY DIFFICULT SITUATIONS, CIRCUMSTANCES, AND CHALLENGES IN MY LIFE. EACH AND EVERY EXPERIENCE HAS MADE ME A LITTLE BIT STRONGER. WHEN I FALL DOWN, I GET BACK UP. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME! I AM STRONG.”
