Choose to See the Beauty

My simple prayer for us all today: “May you see all the Beauty today.” 💖🦋

Do you make it a point to regularly observe Beauty? Not to objectify it, but to actually see the Beauty that is in and around you, and in everyone? It’s a powerful practice of positivity that has helped me to heal some pretty deep wounds over my *many* years on the planet. Even if you have your shit together, I invite you to take time today to look and see Beauty. Celebrate it! Share it!

Ugly Truth: It’s not at all hard to see the bad, the brutal, and the downright ugly in and around us. You really don’t have to go far to find it- we humans carry it with us wherever we go. If I’m being honest, I will admit that I can become so overwhelmed by the darkness in the world that it is sometimes paralyzing. Even now, I can only take the daily news in small bites, because the regular onslaught of bad is like a donkey kick to my guts, making me just weep and ache for the world. Not fun.

Like so many of us, I have been deeply hurt and affected by the darkness in others, so I am not only aware of but truly fearful of the same ugly that coexists inside of me. Do you ever catch yourself being kind of awful and think to yourself, “Whoa, did I really just say that? Did I really think that?” Again, not fun.

It’s astonishing how much power we carry around in our being, and how easy it is for us to “give in” to our own shit. I know that I am not so different from those whose actions I might see as disgusting, hurtful, hateful. Though I may choose to act in Love & Light more often than not, I know I am capable of being just as horrible as the worst person if I want to be.

How to Not Be a Horrible, Hateful Asshole: I believe that we must not ignore or bypass those dark things inside and around us, nor dwell in their brutality- but in order to not be overpowered by their [our] ugliness, we must continually look for and find the Beauty around us, and in us. Grow that. Recognize and nurture and celebrate that Beauty each day. We always have a choice! Today, I choose to see all the Beauty. 💖🦋 #theblessingsbutterfly #empowermentcoach #inspirational #speaker #seethebeauty

Body-Positive Fitness, My Top 5 Tips, & Why I Created The Cocoon

the blessings butterfly - brave

For the past couple of years, I have been wanting- no, longing to- create a series of fitness videos for people living in bigger bodies, with a crazy twist: I don’t want you to lose a bunch of weight (unless that is something YOU want for yourself).  Instead, I wanted to simply love, support, and encourage people just like me to love the body that they are already living in, and provide them with some easy action-steps to help guide them to a healthier lifestyle.

I had this radical notion that I could begin to deeply, truly LOVE myself exactly as I am instead of constantly feeling shitty about the way I look & thinking that “If I just lose this extra weight, I’ll be happier”.   NOPE!  Life is too short, and I decided that I don’t want to waste any more time trying to get my body to look like it did when I was wearing size single-digit before treating myself like the beautiful, strong, wonderful and valuable woman that I already am. Talk about a game-changer!  It’s what led me to create my very own body-positive holistic health & wellness program for bigger bodies, The Cocoon – Empowered Transformation.

The truth is, and trust me when I tell you that the bazillion dollar health & fitness industry doesn’t want me to tell you this: You can achieve good health and still live in a plus-size body.  I’m certainly not saying that you shouldn’t take good care of yourself; no, I’m saying that you don’t have to fit into standards set by the beauty industry in order to be healthy, beautiful, and utterly amazing.  YES!  You can adopt a healthier lifestyle AND you can start loving the body you have right now.   What a crazy concept, hey?  Here are my five top tips to get you started:

  1. Develop a more positive mindset.  Instead of constantly tearing yourself down, criticizing, and comparing, retrain your brain to shift the focus on to what is good about you, and on what you are doing right.  Find the positive spin.  Speak to yourself with love and kindness daily, and especially in times of great stress and challenge.  Talk to and about yourself as you would your best friend. Believe in yourself!
  2.  Move your body every day.  Be intentional about creating more movement for your body every day.  Do at least 10 minutes of physical activity each and every day.  1, 2 or 3 times a week, add in some fun physical activity for 20, 30, or 60 minutes.  Build up slowly, and try different things to see what you enjoy the most.
  3. Food is not optional, so make it great.  Whether you choose to eat as a carnivore, omnivore, or herbivore, the food we eat should nourish our bodies and delight our taste buds.  Always opt for organic, non-GMO certified foods whenever possible.  Choose the freshest fruits & veggies you can find.  Cut way back on sugar, but not on healthy fats.  Cook your own meals whenever possible and develop some mad skills!
  4. Hydrate!  There are so many benefits to your body from drinking plenty of water each day. Improved organ function, fresher breath, eliminating toxins, reducing headaches, clearer, more supple skin, and more.  Start with drinking a glass in the morning before you get out of bed and aim to drink 8 more throughout the day.  If you don’t already love the taste of fresh pure water, infuse it with fruit or herbs. Drink up, Buttercup!
  5. Throw out that damn scale.  Seriously, just ditch it.  Don’t be owned by a number whether it is on a scale, a pair of jeans, a bank account or a birthday cake.  You are WAY more valuable than any of those.  In fact, you are priceless. (See Tip #1!)

Friday Faves: Michael Powell Photography

I’m always amazed by the incredibly gifted people in my world. Today I want to give a shout out to multi-talented photographer, musician and dear friend, Michael Powell. Holla!

Michael and I became friends years ago when he was playing guitar in a mutual friend’s band (more on Josie and her current band Eye the Realist another day). We bonded over LOST, a.k.a. one of the best TV series ever. I bawled my eyes out on his couch during the Series Finale. Oh, and it was a party so there were quite a few people there watching me totally meltdown… Anyway.

At that time, Michael was just starting to develop his interest in photography. I remember seeing his early work and telling him, “You’ve got a really good eye. I hope you’ll keep doing this, like, for real.”

I’m so glad he did!

A few years later, I asked him to take some pics of me to submit to a casting director for a small indie film (“11 Sexy Witches” – ha! I KNOW RIGHT?!) and he did. I got the part, felt good about myself, and then for personal reasons, let the part go.  But here’s the shot that got me hired:

Fast forward to May 2016: I’m in the process of updating my website for The Blessings Butterfly and needed some fresh photos. I want to communicate strength, confidence, beauty, and love- so natch, I call my friend and ask if he’s got any room in his schedule. We set a date and I was so excited!

First I had some pro makeup done. My girl Crystal at the Charlotte Tillman counter in Nordstrom (Cerritos, CA) made me look GLAMazing:

This past Wednesday, we headed into Bommer Canyon (Irvine, CA) for a magical photo shoot and I’m so STOKED on what we did!  We shot for about 90 minutes to capture incredible light from just before sunset through dusk.

Here’s a teaser:

I cannot wait to see the rest of the shoot!

In the Spirit of Being Adventurous

WARNING: This post contains SO MANY EXCLAMATION POINTS!

This week I’ve been focusing on loving my adventurous spirit and letting her out to play a bit more.  I chose this focus because at the end of this week… I am leaving for a special adventure with my Love, and fulfilling my life-long dream of going on a CARIBBEAN CRUISE!

I will see snippets of some of the most beautiful places on earth!

I will enjoy incredible food!

I will dress up all fancy-schmancy (at least twice!)

I will experience amazing natural highs while interacting with stingrays, zip-lining at crazy-fast speeds, and more!

I will experience different cultures, albeit somewhat sanitized and tourist-friendly versions! The majority of my world travel up to this point has been humanitarian based, and I’ve loved it, but I am also (finally!) OK with allowing myself to enjoy something different without feeling guilty. Which leads me to…

I will allow myself to enjoy luxury!  This is huge because it’s not something I’ve ever felt comfortable with.

It’s all extra-exciting for me because not only do I get to do something I’ve absolutely always wanted to do, but I get to share the adventure with the love of my life and some great friends too!  I. Can. Not. WAIT!

Let YOUR spirit of adventure out to play and see where it takes you. Life’s short, get out and LIVE IT!

The Thirty-First Blessing: I am Complete

Blessing #31

In launching The Blessings Butterfly, I initially set out to write a simple book of affirmations, meditations, blessings and encouragements that would express to the people I love the most just how much they mean to me. I chose words and thoughts and themes that would empower the handful of people I had hoped would read it. Beautifully, in the process, I came to discover a new sense of love and acceptance and joy and freedom within myself. The blessings became circular, as they poured out of my heart and flowed over me and came back to me, in a perfect loop. Each Mantra unlocked a profound healing lesson as I explored layers within myself that were still carrying wounds, scars, and brokenness.

This is the culmination of all the blessings, and in reading them together, out loud, I feel a sense of empowerment knowing that I am complete.

I AM LOVED. I AM GRATEFUL. I AM STRONG.
I AM A GOOD PERSON. I AM HEALTHY & I AM WHOLE.
I AM KIND TO MYSELF. I AM PATIENT. I AM GENEROUS.
I AM FUN. I AM ADVENTUROUS. I BELIEVE IN MYSELF.
I AM TRULY BEAUTIFUL. I AM WORTHY & DESERVING OF GOOD THINGS.
I CHOOSE JOY. I AM COMPASSIONATE. I AM WISE. I AM POWERFUL.
I FORGIVE YOU. I MAKE AMENDS.
I CREATE GREAT MEMORIES. I AM CREATIVE.
I SEE BEAUTY ALL AROUND ME.
I AM SAFE & SECURE. I AM COURAGEOUS.
I AM GOOD AT WHAT I DO. I AM ALWAYS LEARNING.
I AM SUCCESSFUL.
I AM WEALTHY.
I AM HONEST.
I AM FREE.

When I work 1:1 with my private clients, these are the lessons that we address together. This is the framework for my holistic healing work, and my offering to the world.

The Twenty-Second Blessing: Seeing Beauty

Blessing #22: I See Beauty All Around Me

If I look for Beauty in the obvious places, I will find it. If I look for Beauty in unconventional places, still I will find it.

There is Beauty in the natural world. There is Beauty in the human-made world. Life in all of its magnificent diversity has offered us more beauty than we can observe in one lifetime. The Universe and all that is within it, so vast and far beyond our limited comprehension, has offered us more beauty than we can observe in a thousand lifetimes. Yet so often we skip right past the most beautiful things, moments, and people in our lives and focus our attention on what needs to be fixed, cleaned, or corrected. When we do this, we miss the blessing of seeing the beauty all around us and appreciating it, acknowledging it, and connecting to it ever so briefly.

Today I will look for the Beauty all around me, and I will find it.

The Twelfth Blessing: Beauty

Blessing #12: I am Truly Beautiful

Dorothy Parker famously said, “Beauty is only skin deep, but ugly goes clean to the bone.”

(Quite) a few years prior, Plato mused that “Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder.”

Is there a woman or a girl on this or any other planet who hasn’t at some point wrestled with the idea that she is, in fact, beautiful? In every age and in every culture, there are evolving and somewhat fickle standards of beauty that women have either tried to achieve or have struggled against. And don’t think that men haven’t been affected by this craziness. If you are a man and you have a mom, a sister, a girlfriend, a wife, a daughter- if you have ever interacted with a female at any point in your life- you know these 4 dreaded words: “Do I look pretty?”  The beauty industry generates billions of dollars in revenue each year by playing on our fear of looking ugly. God forbid that we should be considered ugly! As though our face and hair and body must appear perfect by some industry standard or we just won’t measure up and we will be, I don’t know, less than.

I see nothing wrong at all about caring for your physical appearance and making an effort to look your best.

Sadly, we seem to have become so twisted in our view of what we really are and so skewed in our perception of what beauty is that we will do anything to be beautiful. We obsess over our weight, the size of our breasts, and the shape of our butts and bellies. We freak out over our first wrinkles and our first grey hairs. We go on unsustainable diets and insane exercise programs. We pour a fortune into facial creams and skin treatments and hair coloring. We modify and alter our appearance through accessories, cosmetics, even surgery, all on a quest to be beautiful.  To hear the words, even if they are spoken by just one person: Wow, you look beautiful!  Because let’s be honest- it feels pretty good to hear that.

We want so badly to be validated as beautiful.  And when we are not, or worse- when we are cut down by the cruel words of someone’s intolerance, bullying, and shaming- something inside us dies a little, and we just give up. We don’t believe that we have anything beautiful about us, minimizing and ignoring the incredible creatures that we ALL are.

When someone compliments you on your appearance, do you ever catch yourself saying things like, “Thanks, but…” and then proceed to verbally tear down something else about yourself?  Or maybe it’s more like, “I guess my ____ looks okay, but my _____ needs a lot of work.”  Or how about, “Well, I might be (insert vaguely complimentary term) but I’m certainly not beautiful.”  Hey! You know what? Stop it! You ARE Beautiful. Yes. You are!

I want to change that. Today, instead of criticizing the way I look, I want to go full on Plato on myself and see myself as Beautiful. I want to truly see the beautiful essence of LIFE that I embody! I want to look in my lovely green eyes and see the eternal energy behind them, all of my light and all of my darkness, and be in awe of perfectly, amazingly, uniquely beautiful ME. I will choose to stop picking apart every so-called flaw.  I will silence the voice of the fat-shamer.  I will turn aside the judging eyes. It may not be easy, and I may break down in tears, but I am determined to stop punishing myself. Today, I invite you to do the same.  Come on, Beautiful. Let’s do this! <3
