Home Office: Eat Easy

Feelin' Just Peachy, thank you very much! Easy foods that fuel my hustle today for breakfast: Peaches-n-Cream Smoothie + Peaches-n-Cream Overnight Oats. I like to use vanilla almond milk for my liquid in both of these recipes. So good!

Of all the many great things about working from home and owning my own businesses (making my own hours, zero commute, self-reliance, full creativity… leggings… pets…) there is one big pitfall that nobody really warns you about: you might start to eat like shit.

As in, forget to eat for half the day and then look up from your project in full on HANGRY mode, pushing past the bewildered pets on your way to the kitchen to eat anything that you can get your hands on- an entire bag of chips, 27 cookies, a huge chunk of cheese (bitten off from the brick, no less) and oh maybe a carrot to round things off. Or you just power through a pint of ice cream (hello, Halo Top!) instead. Yeah, I've totally done that.

Or maybe you're more of a there's-nothing-here-I-even-want-to-eat-so-I-guess-I'm-ordering-delivery-again kind of person. Yup. Totally done that, too.

There's nothing really wrong with any of these scenarios every once in a while, like when you're pushing up on a hard deadline or product launch or huge project that lights you up. We're bosses, but we're also human. Food fails are gonna happen sometimes. Wipe your mouth and move on.

It does become a problem though when it quickly becomes your norm, and you stop stocking your kitchen with an easy mix of more healthful foods in favor of "convenience" meals. You forget how to eat well.

As the pounds packed on (70 bonus pounds, y'all) to fill out my small frame, I have been making the choice to "eat easy" whenever possible. My kitchen always has fresh fruits & veggies (some grown from my backyard garden) nuts and seeds, fresh eggs from my hens, yogurts and cereals and yes some chips too. And Halo Top (so dang good!). With intention, I am enjoying prepping simple, easy, great-tasting meals that are healthy AND convenient. Win-Win!

I've also recently added more movement by taking H2O aerobics 2x weekly and setting a timer to GET UP and away from my desk after every 60 minutes to stretch, walk outside, or have a mini dance party for 5, 10, 15 minutes. I don't have really huge weight-loss goals, and I love my current body very much- but I know I feel better in this body when it's a few pounds lighter, so that's what I'm going for. Ease.

DING! Excuse me, it's time for my dance party.

#MondayMantra: I Allow Things to be Easy

I allow things to be easy.

Lately I’ve been thinking about how often  we tend to make a task or project or process far more difficult than it needs to be.

Do you ever get frustrated when:

  • You find yourself waiting in a long line and the person at the front is placing an unnecessarily complex order? Or…
  • The person carrying out your service request is reciting back a time consuming list of company policies? Or…
  • You are trying to find basic information on a website and it is nowhere obvious? Or…
  • The assembly or installation instructions for a new product make NO sense to you whatsoever because they are overly complicated? Or…
  • You can see a more efficient, effective, or streamlined way of accomplishing something at your job, but your boss stubbornly refuses to implement it?

I mean, wouldn’t it be wonderful to just wave your magic wand over the annoying or inconvenient or frustrating things in your life and have them suddenly just be easy!

A huge part of our human narrative is this notion that “nothing good comes easily” and if anything is to have lasting value to us then it MUST be difficult to achieve.  The thing is, this is only partially true.

Fun Fact: We don’t have to make things more complicated in order to make them more valuable.

There are plenty of things in this life that are difficult, and there is great value in learning how to overcome our struggles.  It’s how we become stronger, how we learn, and how we grow into more amazing versions of ourselves.  This isn’t about those things.

This is about not wasting our energy on making the simple things difficult.  This is about allowing ourselves to experience and enjoy the things in life that are easy.  This is about removing the mental blocks we set up for ourselves that prevent us from achieving our greatness.

We can absolutely be appreciative of good things that come easily.

I invite you to try this mantra today: “I allow things to be easy.”

Which areas of your life are you creating more resistance or struggle in that you can simplify today?

Rad Recipes: Apple-Cinnamon Ugly Smoothie

The beauty is on the inside for my Apple-Cinnamon Ugly Smoothie! The cinnamon & apple combine to create a dessert-like flavor. This healthy & delicious meal to go is ready in 5 minutes (or less!) and tastes sweet & fresh.

1/2 apple of your choice, chopped into small cubes

1 leaf Kale, stripped from stem and torn in pieces

1 small Cutie tangerine or sweet orange, peeled and sections separated

1/2-1 teaspoon coconut oil

1 cup cold coconut water

Dash of cinnamon

Blend and Enjoy!

Rad Recipes: Sweet Sunrise Smoothie

My Sweet Sunrise Smoothie is so good! It’s loaded with natural, whole-food energy to power me through a busy morning, and it’s so easy to prepare (less than 5 minutes!)- this is one of my go-to breakfast choices during the week.

1 ripe banana (lots of spots on the peel)

1-2 small clementines, peeled

3-4 baby carrots (I’m obsessed with the tri-colored ones, but just use whatever you have)

1 oz cold coconut water

Blend until smooth-ish and enjoy!

Photo simply doesn’t do this baby justice! Such a pretty shade of orange. 🙂

A Little Nourishment

Mantra: I like to eat, so I choose nourishing meals that satisfy me!

Here’s a tasty little something I whipped up in the kitchen that makes a nice light meal or a hearty side dish: Brussels Sprouts & Bacon. It was filling, sweet, crunchy, savory, easy-peasy and super satisfying.

I don’t really measure stuff, I just kind of play with it- so the measurements are more guesstimate than fact. I also don’t actually count calories, but if you’re into that then this is pretty low-cal. You can always substitute margarine for the butter and leave out the bacon, if that makes you happy… no judgment here! 😉
